Viking Summer Raid 2015

August 8, 2015 @ 9:00 am - August 9, 2015 @ 6:00 pm

$35 – $80

VIKING SUMMER RAID 2015- Powerlifting, or Strongman… or BOTH.

Powerlifting- unsanctioned, Strongman- NAS Level I.

Powerlifting: Saturday, August 8th @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Strongman: Sunday, August 9th @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

“He who lives without discipline, dies without honor.” – Icelandic proverb

In the Viking beginning… there were rocks, and stones.  To be lifted, to be challenged against… and in similar fashion the first Viking Summer Raid was born, just a few weeks after Viking Performance Training opened its doors, and the strongman challenge was engaged.

For the second year, there will again be a Summer Raid… but this time, strength will evolve, and continue to be challenged!  The 2015 Viking Summer Raid consists of TWO days- Day 1 is a Powerlifting contest, unsanctioned as a test of raw strength against the iron in squat, bench press, and deadlift.  Day 2 is a Strongman contest, a NAS Level I testing strength in its most raw form.

Compete in one contest or the other- strive for all-time bests in weight moved, PRs in strongman, or contest placings among your class.

Compete in both contests, two grueling days of maximal effort in barely more than 24 hours’ time… and you challenge yourself, testing resolve, grit, and prove to yourself that you have what it takes not just to finish, but to conquer, and LEAD, the Raids to call the gods’ attention!

Event Rules (listed in order of contest)

Powerlifting Raid (unsanctioned)

There will be 3 attempts each lift; attempts may not be lower than the previous attempt.

Athletes will maintain the same flight order by weight class through all lifts and attempts.

The following equipment will be used- Texas Squat Bar for Squat, Texas Power Bar for Bench Press, Texas Deadlift Bar for Deadlifts.  Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift will all compete using iron plates and may be contested in increments as low as 2.5lb (we have 1 1/4 lb plates).

Squat- Lifter will communicate to head judge, after walking the barbell out, they are ready to begin.  Judge will give “squat” command.  Lifter squats to or below parallel and stands back up, without moving the feet.  Judge will call “rack” command after lifter is motionless.

Bench Press- Lifter will approach bench when given the command get ready, then unrack the barbell with or without a spotter.  Once spotter has removed contact and bar is motionless, judge will give “Lift” command and bar will be lowered to chest.  Bar must be motionless on chest before judge gives “Press” command and lifter presses weight up.  Once bar is motionless at arms’ length, judge will give the “Rack” command.

Deadlift- Once judge gives “Lift” command, lifter may approach the bar and deadlift with any foot placement.  Lifter may not hitch and bar may not have downward movement.  At full extension the lifter and bar must become motionless, and then judge will give the “Down” command.  The lifter MUST maintain control of the bar on the way down.

Equipment

Singlets are NOT required.  Lift in whatever you’re comfortable in, so long as it’s not offensively minded!  Shirts are required for all lifts, shoes are required for all lifts EXCEPT deadlifts (socks only are allowable).  Calf length socks MUST be worn for deadlifts.

Weightlifting belts, wrist wraps, knee sleeves are allowed.  No lifting straps or knee wraps (note this is to minimize gear which may directly increase the force output).

General Rules

  • Best Lifter awards will be decided using the Wilks Formula.  In the event of a tie, we have swords and axes and will melee for the prize.
  • Sportsmanship is expected and required.  Strength sports are the greatest sports in the world, let’s keep it that way.
  • There may be a pre-event prayer. No one is expected to participate, so please do not feel obligated. All we ask is to be respectful of those that do or do not wish to participate.
  • This is a drug free contest. If you are juiced feel free to come cheer on your buddies but please do not bother to sign up.
  • If you have a question, please ask! I would rather take a minute to clarify something than to see someone have a poor showing due to a misunderstanding.

Event Rules

Strongman Raid (NAS Level I)

A Worthy Lift (Max Weight Axle Clean and Press)– Who will be worthy enough to be the last one standing and lifting the mighty axle?  3 attempts, you may enter at any weight or skip any weight.  Wessels rule is in effect, if you miss a lift, you are done with the event.  There will be a minimum opening weight, weights will go up 15 pounds each lift for ladies and teens and 30 pounds each lift for males.  Any weight can be skipped by any athlete, but if an attempt is missed the lifter will be credited with the last successful lift, NOT the last weight passed.  Athlete must completely lock out the implement and WAIT FOR THE DOWN SIGNAL.  Ladies and teens will use a 2-inch fat bar (20lb empty), males a 2 5/16″ giant axle of doom (90lb empty).  You will have a 30 second time limit per attempt.  Continental cleans ARE allowed, as long as the bar does not rest for longer than 3 seconds on the belt.  Buckles must be on the back.  Equipment allowed: Belt, chalk, knee wraps, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves.  Equipment NOT allowed: lifting straps, tacky, elbow wraps, slingshots, Go-Go Gadget Arms.

Mjollnir’s Journey (Max Weight Farmer’s Walk, 30 feet)- Who can carry the Mighty Thor’s Hammer?  3 attempts, you may enter at any weight or skip any weight.  Wessels rule is in effect, if you miss a lift, you are done with the event.  A SINGLE drop constitutes the end.  There will be a minimum opening weight, weights will go up 10 pounds each lift for ladies and teens, 20 pounds each lift for males per hand.  Any weight can be skipped by any athlete, but if an attempt is missed the lifter will be credited with the last successful lift, NOT the last weight passed.  Athlete must start with implements completely behind starting line and carry them without drops COMPLETELY over the finish line.  Handles weighing approximately 25 pounds each, empty, will be used.  Equipment allowed: Belt, chalk, knee wraps, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves.  Equipment NOT allowed: tacky, lifting straps, Halfthor stunt doubles.

Norseman’s Row (Arm Over Arm Car Pull)- So maybe Vikings didn’t have cars…but we’re a landlocked state, and we’re making sure we pull something heavy!  Seated arm over arm pull for time.  Vehicle of choice must be pulled using a rope from a seated position 50 feet across the parking lot.  Vehicle types are TBA, but…HEAVY.  If Thor is particularly violent on this day and weather is nasty, we will move it inside for an Arm Over Arm Sled Drag on turf.  There will be a 60-second time limit for this event; uncompleted attempts will be credited for distance.

Berserker’s Charge (Drag & Carry Over Bar Medley)- Competitors must carry or drag implements across a 30-foot course and place them over a 48″ bar: keg, sandbag, keg.  The event will then end with a chain dragged 20 feet across a line.  75-second time limit.  Equipment allowed: human capabilities, blood, sweat, tears, and guts.  Equipment NOT allowed: Senzu beans…but you can give them to me.

Stones of the North (Stone Overhead Press, Stone Loading, and then another Press)- A stone contest of grueling proportions only those possessed with the hardiness of the North will complete it!  Competitors begin by taking an Atlas Stone from the ground to an overhead press- MUST WAIT for the down signal, which will be given when the arms are about as locked out as can be expected with boulders over your head.  Then 3 progressively heavier stones must be loaded to a 48″ platform.  To finish, competitors must lift a natural stone from ground to overhead, and RECEIVE THE DOWN SIGNAL.  75-second time limit.  Equipment allowed: Belt, knee wraps, chalk, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, tacky.  Equipment not allowed: stepping boxes to load stones.
